Thumb (CMC) Arthritis

The first metacarpal (base of your thumb) sits on top of a bone called the trapezium in your wrist which makes up your first CMC joint. Arthritis forms in this joint and causes pain, stiffness and inflammation.

Due to the many different directions your thumb can move and the use it gets, most people end up with arthritis in this area.

Pain and stiffness with use of the thumb and dull aches at rest.

Soft bracing and anti-inflammatories are the mainstay of initial treatment. If continued daily dysfunction occurs, surgical intervention to remove the trapezium and suspend the thumb is the definitive treatment.
