Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a compression of the median nerve at the wrist.

Repetitive occupational work, smoking, alcoholism, pregnancy and some health conditions are associated with increased risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Compression leads to numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger of the hand. As symptoms progress some will wake up at night with tingling and have clumsiness when holding small objects. Prolonged compression can lead to muscle weakness and permanent numbness.

The most definitive treatment for this is surgical intervention. Yet in early stages, nerve glide exercises and wrist bracing at night may help alleviate symptoms.
